Dear Professor Salmi,

I have been reading your batch secrets and came across the ruler.bat
command. I have a variation you may like. I first implemented this
ruler, or cols as I name the command, on Unix. I find it helps just
before a sort by column, which is the only type of sort DOS can do.

The variation adds the tens digit where ruler.bat currently has a
blank and blanks the digits 9 and 1, thus creating a ruler where
the column position is easily read off including the tens position.

Not being sure if the hex code thats accompany the [2A would
abort the Email I have blanked them out.

I have been delighted in reading your batch secrets and know of
many friends will enjoy the copy I plan on distributing just as
I got from Garbo (read that as no changes).

Thank you very much for sharing these with me. I thoroughly enjoy
your work and I applaud your effort at making Internet a distribution
center for your ideas and software. I think you set a fine example
of the tradition of Internet/Usenet as a media for communication and
exchange. Your effort shows considerable polish and user friendliness.
Please keep up the effort.

If it is to be, Yours Sincerely,
It is up to me. Peter Benjamin

I will share this anonymously on the Garbo feedback files. It
has been very confusing (but not at all surprising) that the
feedback whenever I write to CBIP.d is so ambiguous.

You are most welcome, and your support is much appreciated.

That is why we are going for the new arrangement
   comp.archives.msdos.announce (moderated)
   comp.archives.msdos.d
We cannot absolutely guarantee that this will be better if it
passes, but we have done everything to we could think of in drawing
up the charters to avoid similar problems as in CBIP.

We have to be fair to the the CBIP users and to ourselves in the
sense that it is not really anybody's personal fault, but rather
that the setup of the CBIP newsgroups is such that it invites these
problems.

We did our collective best to word Yossi's notes constructively.
But in the end it turned out that the guidance was such an uphill
struggle that the regular public guidance was withdrawn.

I have got, and still keep getting two major kinds of feedback on my
own involvement. The great majority have been constructive and
friendly just like yours. But there are exceptions. Here is one
example, and would you believe from a fellow professor (from the
US):

Would you please stop your fucking nagging and let people alone?
If you MUST nag -- please do it by e-mail -- or AT THE VERY LEAST,
   restrict your postings to Europe?

Another example:

Timo, since you believe it was your god given right to annoy
people on this net with your advice, I have a little advice
   to give you:
            --->>    MIND YOUR OWN D*MN BUSINESS    <<---

In a more rational vain some of the users point out that UseNet
newsgroups are an anarchy, and that they would prefer it stay so. I
don't personally agree that it is a constructive approach, but when
put in a civil manner I of course respect the diverging view.

The third kind of feedback has been genuine bafflement with no
ill-intentions, followed by requests to help out.

> way the newsgroup is going now. I hope in the future that others will
> see the service that you and the other archive maintainers provide and

Well, according to my experience the majority does, but not everyone
sees it that way. I base that observation for example on the fact
that supporting letters like yours have been overwhelmingly more
common than the flames. And remember that those who are aggravated
are much more pliable to write. In fact so much so, that I have
taken the precaution of not reading my email at all if I see that it
is from about three named individuals. (I direct them to an elm
=reject folder).

> just say thank you. I wish I could help in a bigger way but will have
> to be satisfied with just giving you the praise you deserve.

It was nice of you to tell me this. To sum it up, we tried guidance
for a while, but the problems were too great. The effect was
transient at best, and some of the users only got abusive. We have
no choice left other than to let CBIP subgroups go their own way,
and hope that the new proposed groups will pass and then fare
better.

Incidentally the voting is due about the 5-8th of November 1992.

Please read the CBIP.archives FAQ posted every Saturday to this

But yes, 1.20, 2.00, 2.01, and 3.05 all are hacks. And don't worry.
When the real McCoy which PKWare has been merrily advertising since
spring in the Magazines finally comes out about by the turn of the
this millennium, you are bound to hear it loud and clear.

In the meanwhile, the current, valid versions easily obtainable are

A brief list of features, from the "Computer Language" magazine ad:

        - Integrated Development Environment for Windows and DOS
        - Application Frameworks(tm) for Windows and DOS...
        - Break the 640K barrier with DPMI
        - ObjectBrowser(tm) for Windows and DOS...
        - Fastest compiler -- 85,000 lines per minute (*)
        - Color syntax highlighting...
        - Turbo Debugger(r), Turbo Profiler(tm), and Turbo Assembler(r)
        - Resource Workshop and WinSight(tm)
        - DOS Extender included free.
        - Cross-platform DLLs in Windows and DOS.

(*)On Compaq 386/33.

There is also Turbo Pascal 7.0, which is everything *except* the Windows stuff
and the tools.

They have implemented the same strategy here as with their C/C++ products.
That is, the "Borland..." products are the professional products and have all
the goodies and tools (e.g. Debugger, Profiler, Assembler, etc). The
"Turbo..." products are for non-professionals.

I called their order desk; here's the poop:

        - Won't ship for 3 to 5 weeks.

Syd, I thought you might like to have "undigest" for the next Elm
release. Please feel free to post it to comp.mail.elm if you like it.

This recently-revised program can be used either as a pipe from stdin to
stdout or with a command line argument, in which case it makes an output
file.

The program depends on the digest being properly formatted in accordance
with RFC 1153, which requires that the headers of the member messages
of the digest be in a particular order.

This program is Unix mail format specific in that it requires the
usual Unix "From " line to be present as the first line of the
message. I'm sure it could be adapted to accept MMDF or VMS start-
of-message markers.

Modified 1/27/88 to handle more types of digests and
a compile-time option added (LONGNAME) which will cause

This has been tested with the Info-IBM, Info-Kermit, and

This program should be called 'UNDIGEST' rather than 'DIGEST'

/*
DIGEST: (version 3) November, 1984

NAME:
Digest - reformats the ailist digest for use with "mail -f"

SYNOPSIS:
        digest file [file]

DESCRIPTION:

digest takes the file name given in first argument and places the
reformatted file in the second argument, if given. If no output file
(2nd argument) is given, the output will be placed into a default file
whose name is of the form VOL.NUM where VOL and NUM are the volume and
number of the ailist digest fed in (e.g. 2.144,etc.).

A few notes:
        (1) if only one argument is given, it is assumed to be the
input file. If no args are given, you get prompted for
for the input file, and the output is sent to the default
            file construction.

        (2) This has been tested only for use with the specific ailist/human-
nets format now in use. I will soon get around to adding
code to this program to handle other formats. When I do,
            I will send it along.

        (3) The input to this program must be A SINGLE AILIST
OR HUMAN-NETS DIGEST. If you have been stuffing all
your ailist digests into a single file, running this pgm
on that file will yield incorrect and unpredictable results.
The pgm is best used to manage the incoming stuff.

        (4) the input file is left untouched (i.e. is not removed)

        (5) digest does not work with piped input (a bug, sorry).
This has meant for me that I stick the day's ailist digest
into a temp file when I receive it over "mail", and then
later "digest" this temp file to get it into a suitable
            form for "mail -f".

BUGS:
If there are ailist sub-entries which do not have a DATE:
field in the header, they will be appended to the entry
        prior.

Any questions, suggestions or problems, etc. should be sent to

I'm one of these lazy types who use list and grep constantly, so renamed
them to l.com and g.exe resprectively. Running them from a small RAMdisk
on a 386/40 gives instant response and I navigate the whole range of
(thoroughly excellent) Walnut Creek ROMs with ease.

One hint about using LIST - make sure the environment variable LIST is set
to a read/write drive. It needs to create temp files when viewing archive
contents etc. If you don't have SET LIST=F:\TMP or whatever, it defaults
to current drive and directory - and fails with a write protect error on the
CD-ROMs. Took me months to figure out why it worked on the hard disk and
not on the ROM.

D. Information on proposed newsgroups

Proposed newsgroup: comp.archives.msdos.announce
Type: moderated
Charter:
This moderated newsgroup is for the upload announcements and
related information from MSDOS FTP sites with PD and shareware
material. The subjects include the upload announcements via the
MSDOS FTP site moderators, the MSDOS sites' periodical summaries,
potential policy statements and downtime warnings, and the MSDOS FTP
site moderators' reports about the connectivity problems with their
archive sites. Unix announcements conform only if they directly
relate to transferring or handling the MSDOS material from the MSDOS
FTP sites.

Moderators: Keith Petersen (principal moderator), Timo Salmi,
            Harri Valkama, and Brian O'Neill
Other FTP site moderators are welcome to help in the
joint moderation of this proposed newsgroup.

Further clarification:
The purpose of comp.archives.msdos.announce is to be a ONE-WAY
channel for MSDOS upload announcements which the moderators handle,
and other one-way, occasional information relating to MSDOS FTP
sites. The moderators will therefore not be handling users'
discussion material, questions, and replies. The unmoderated
comp.archives.msdos.d newsgroup (see below) will cover that aspect.

Proposed newsgroup: comp.archives.msdos.d
Type: unmoderated
Charter:
This unmoderated newsgroup is the discussion subgroup of the
moderated comp.archives.msdos.announce newsgroup. The newsgroup
covers users' reports, questions and discussions about the PD and
shareware programs at the MSDOS FTP sites, and the users' questions
about the MSDOS FTP sites such as the users' connectivity problem
reports. The group is also for posting requests/replies concerning
where to find such programs as are stored at the MSDOS FTP sites.
The newsgroup does not cover any discussions of fully commercial
programs or programs for other operating systems like OS/2. (These
programs have Usenet newsgroups of their own).

   Hello Glenn,

I have forwarded this to Harri Valkama, because I do not know the
answer to your question. I take care of MsDos material for FTP I but
   don't have information about mailsplit.

I guess you have used our mailserver because you are wondering that
mailsplit. Mailsplit has been used only to send these files. So it
takes care of the uuencoding and splitting. You don't have to know
anything about mailsplit. Just save these parts together and uudecode
the resulst. BTW: have you read our HELP file.

There are two file lists you should get
  78562 Dec 2 08:09 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/INDEX.ZIP
  29601 Dec 1 16:12 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/turbopas/0turbopa.zip

The former is our annotated file list, the latter the contents
list (unzip -v Files) of all the .zip files in our /pc/turbopas

Furthermore there is turbopas material in my own program directory
/pc/ts. These are my Turbo Pascal TPUs.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for your kind offer, but Garbo is a somewhat specialized
archive that actively processes material in its areas of interest.
Mirroring is not at all in our field of operations. We do thus not
mirror any FTP site. I think that nic.funet.fi was the right place
to contact as far as Finland is concerned. You might also wish to
look at the list of MsDos FTP sites to see any other potential
sites. The list is
   9357 Dec 11 11:36 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder17.zip

Our pc/demos directory is fairly exclusive deliberately. It is not
a general PC demo directory, but rather for special cases of
exceptional general interest. As a rule we do not store demos
because we have no motivation to carry part of the marketing costs
of fully commercial products.

Please do not be put off that the reply had to be this. I am very
pleased that you asked us.

   All the best, Timo

Hello my Friend Duncan,

No, we explicitly promised the users that Keith's msdos-ann will not
be discontinued because of the introduction of CAM.announce.

The information for getting on the list, and getting one's name off
the list can be found for example in
   3732 Dec 12 09:46 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/MSDOSANN.ZIP
With Keith we store the essential information about msdos-ann in
there.

As for Garbo's exclusive mailing list one has to email me
specificially for a removal. But that list occasionally includes
specific information that does not go to CAM.announce nor msdos-ann.

I, too, wish to entend my best wishes to you, Duncan. Your

enjoyable and valued, and I always look forward to hearing from you.
You have a special place in Garbo's heart.

Hello John,

This is of general interest, so I'll take the liberty of posting
your report and my reply to comp.archives.msdos.d. It seems that
what you probably have here is a .zip file that has been packed with
PKZIP 1.93A or its Unix equivalent by Info-ZIP programming group.
Thus it is a problem with the version, not a problem with the case
of the file names. The thing to do is to get a compatible extractor
and those are available as
  37211 Aug 30 22:17 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/arcers/unzip50.exe
 301326 Nov 23 11:38 garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/arcers/unzip50.tar.Z

Incidentally, for the time being SIMTEL20 and Garbo do not accept
version 1.93A zip files. All the uploads must be for version 1.10.

   All the best, Timo

Before doing anything drastic you might consider contacting your own
site's sysadmin to ask him/her how to use mail filters. There are
filter programs which you can use (also) to discard all mail without
seeing it if it comes from a paticular user. You might even set it
up to bounce the message back, but that requires some programming
skills. As an archive site and newsgroup moderator I have to
automatically sort my mail influx with a filter, but it also comes
handy to ward off the pests.

But please do not ask me for the technical details or for individual
tutoring on setting it up. Unfortunately I cannot afford the time.
As I said, consider consulting your local sysadmin about mail
filters.

If you have seen an announcement of an upload in
comp.archives.msdos.announce, but it is no longer there, you can get
recent back issues of the digests on them for the msdos-ann mailing
list which Keith maintains. If you need to know how, the
instructions are stored in
   3796 Dec 20 10:29 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/MSDOSANN.ZIP

>viewer to set the news standards for gif viewers (or something like that).

In fact I only copied the original upload announcement, and then
referred to it. Thus the claim was not mine, nor does it present my
opinnions in any way. If I copy an uploader's announcement, it has
little to do with wheteher I agree or disagree with the uploaders
views.

>Can you tell me what it is called? (and where to get it?)

Start my looking at the recent announcements. First check the
comp.archives.msdos.announce postings and the msdos-ann digests.

You also might scan the filelists
 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/INDEX.ZIP
 garbo.uwasa.fi:/win31/INDEX
 wsmr-simtel20.army.mil: PD1:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMLIST.ZIP

Furthermore you can download
 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/_files.in
to see what has been uploaded in Garbo MsDos section this month.
The other main directories at Garbo have a similar file.

>Is there e-mail access to it? (with out ftpmail@dewcrl.dec.com ?)

If you do not have FTP capability, Garbo has an email server. You
are welcome to ask me for the canned Garbo (29Kb) instructions.
SIMTEL20 also is "mail served" but that is by third parties. Please
watch out for Keith's periodic announcements of the "trickle"
servers.

>Thanks in advance

I hope that in the long run in its generality this reply is of more
use to you, and other users trying trying to find again recent
uploads, than if I just give the exact pointer. Besides I do not
have it readily. I do not handle our Windows (or Mac) material at
all (if it indeed is a Windows upload you are speaking of).

Incidentally, you have a bouncing adrress so you'll only see this on
the news. Unfortunately it also means that until you / your system
manager do something about it at your site, you cannot be able to
use our email server.

I am very sorry, but some time ago I had to decide that I just don't
have the time to handle users' disks. I have fixed electronic
routines for handling uploads through the net, and since maitaining
an archive site already takes an inordianate amount of my time away
from my other professional activities, I came to the conlusion that
I will not be offering any more an upload possibility via physical
disks.

I am very sorry that my own answer has to be this, but I'll forward
this to two other archive site moderators in case their personal
policies are different from mine.

OK, I think this is what the deal is:

wuarchive DOES mirror /pc/doc-net. However, garbo:/pc is equivalent
to wuarchive:/mirrors/garbo.uwasa.fi. Because of this, there is no
/pc directory on wuarchive. It seems to be just a matter of semantic
confusion rather than a true omission.

I am very pleased to hear that you have found my batches of use. I
don't have a batch for what you wish to do but I have a program for
that purpose. It is called TDEL.EXE, and it is contained in my
garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/tsutle21.zip utilities collection. If you
apply it with TDEL /S SUBDIR/*.* it will recursively delete all the
files and TDEL /S /D SUBDIR will then recursively remove SUBDIR and
everything below it.

> I was working on a batch to do this and got stuck, I was wondering
> If you have wrote anything like that or close to that so i can take

I think that this task might be somewhat too complicated for a
reliable batch solution. It is fairly easy to traverse a tree
upwards in a batch but to go from a root to all subdirectories is
something I would not know how to do with only batch programming.

> look at... Also, have you wrote any batches that will go and edit
> an "autoexec.bat" file?

I just use an ordinary text editor to do that. But in a sense
BOOT.BAT in my batch collection does that, or rather exchanges
autoexec.bat files for different boot setups.

Hello. Try putting:

Hello Dave,

While very much welcoming your question, this is typically something
that would be better asked on the news. I have forwarded this reply
to
  comp.compression
  comp.os.msdos.programmer
  comp.archives.msdos.d
  comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted
with followups directed this time to
  comp.compression
since it seems to be nearest your subject.

   All the best, Timo

P.S. I hope that you gentle users will understand that while I try
to be of help, there is a limit to what kind of services I have time
to provide you. If you are looking for some program or code, I
would very much prefer that you ask publicly on the news after
emplying the standard FTP archives search methods Keith Petersen and
I ofter present for example in comp.archives.msdos.d.

Please do not get this wrong. I still very much welcome all your
email. But for practical reasons I have to draw your attention to
this aspect. Else I am totally swamped.

PKZIP 2.04c is shipping. Please allow 7-10 business
days to process and ship orders.

Do not trust or use any version of PKZIP other than 1.10,1.93, and
2.04c. All other versions currently circulating on BBS's are fakes.
These fake programs should be considered hostile and not be trusted,
they may contain viruses, trojans, or other tricks.

Note: The Norton Anti-Virus utility erroneously reports that the files
PKUNZIP.EXE and PKZIPFIX.EXE contain the Maltese Amoeba virus. This is
a false report. These files do NOT contain this virus.

I hear that PKWARE is getting an examption, or an injuction, or
whatever to export excepting some totalitarian countries like Iraq.
Thus the export problem may be not relevant at all, any more.
Nevertheless, for the argument's sake let's continue.

>Yes, I know garbo is in Finland and not subject to US laws but I'm just
>wondering if they have any policy of following US restriction on exports
>of encryptation or not.

I am not a lawyer, but, worse still, an accountant. :-)

What I say next does not intend the slightest of offence to anyone.

While meaning well, North American users often pose in this respect
more xenophobic questions than they might realize, even when they
state like Chaim that the US law do not apply in Finland. We get
material from all over the world to Garbo. Taken to the extremes I
would have to know the legislation and aberrations of each and every
country that can somehow reach Garbo through the net. That is
impossible. So is it fair that I should somehow be privy to US
regulations in particular? What makes them so awfully special? (a
rhetorical question).

I can assure you that I am a law abiding citizen, and I try to
comply with the Finnish and the international laws. But I have
never seen any information on the international validity of this per
se absurd US export law. Until someone officially convinces me
otherwise, I consider this debacle an entirely internal US problem.
(Perhaps I should coldly say that until officially approached, it is
none of my business).

I live in Finland and interact with the international community. US
is just one part of the latter, even if it often is an important and
a dominant part.

In the best of spirits, and meaning well:

   All the best, Timo

As I said in an earlier posting, it seems that PKWARE has this time
got the permission for exporting.

But just for the argument's sake, consider the following. I
imported the file from the States. That is different from someone
exporting it. With the global electronic village we live in, there
are just two options to stop us non-americans from importing such
material. The first is not making it availabe IN THE STATES!!!! The
second alternative is disconnecting the transatlantic telephone
links, and severing the overseas computer links.

Taken to its logical conclusion, no U.S. specific shareware can be
legal in the States unless the North Americans cut off all the
communication links with the rest of the world.

Might we discuss a third possiblity? It could be argued that an
ftp site is nothing more than a type of 'software store.' If,
in the United States, someone from Bulgaria walked in to a
'regular' software store and popped down his AMEX Gold Card,
that person could walk out with dBASE IV, LOTUS123, etc., all
of which have export restrictions. I doubt seriously that the
store could be prosecuted when U.S. Customs officials discovered
the wares in airline baggage destined for Bulgaria. Who is going
to check the identity of everyone buying software? There's no
requirement that this even be done. So in our electronic
software store (the ftp archive), we have umtpy-dozen files,
some of which may have DES restrictions. These files are
available, as are the ones in our 'street store' to anyone
who can get access to them. I don't feel, and I think this
could be argued in one of our Courts, that we (in the U.S.)
are NOT exporting the file. We are not physically, ourselves,
moving it from one location to another.

However, I'm not a lawyer (only a sometimes-ex accountant),
and should probably leave the legal meanderings for those
who make their living at it.

Or continue using version 1.10.

I have now thought about the state of the matters, listened what
others have had to say in comp.compression in particular, and found
myself two, possibly three bugs. From an MsDos FTP archive site
maintainer's point of view I have no other choice at this stage than
not accepting .zip uploads if they have not been made with PKZIP
1.10 or Info-Zip's garbo.uwasa.fi:/unix/arcers/zip10ex.tar.Z.

For the time being Garbo uploads packed with pkz204c.zip or
zip19p1.tar.Z are discouraged. (There is nothing wrong with
zip19p1, mind you!).

I can only hope that these problems are ironed out a.s.a.p.

        Friend Timo -
I note that many posts are of the type " Where can I find
xyz103.zip? ". The poster often knows exactly which file
he wants. The are often told to use Archie, but not
told how. I know this info is in many FAQs; I also know that
you can learn the rudiments of Archie just by asking Archie.
I also know that most of these people don't do these things;
I leave it to others to speculate why this is so.
(I will eventually get to the point) -
Being lazy, after I used Archie a few times I wrote a very small
script that does all the work for me. If I see something in
the news that interests me, I hit ^Z, run locate filename
restart with fg to continue reading the news. Later, I look
at filename.archie and pick the ftp site nearest to me to get the
file.
I am probably the zillionth person to write such a script,
I doubt it is superior to any of those others, but it works for me.
Now - how to get people to use it or one like it? If they
don't/won't read the FAQs what can we do? Maybe in your conversations
with Doc or Keith you can come up with a way to save us all the
time/bandwidth for these (usually misposted) inquiries.
Since it is so small, and probably could be yet shortened,
I'll tack it on here for your disposal.
        Happy New Year
        BartB

Some users have expressed concern or understandable curiousity on US
export restrictions vs PKZIP with encryotion being available from Garbo.
Below is the official information from PKWARE.

   All the best, Timo

Here is the offical sheet....

The United States government has given permission for PKWARE, Inc.
to export our Data Encryption technology except to the following
countries:

Cuba,Iran,Iraq,North Korea, the police or military of South Africa,
Syria, and Vietnam.
