Mon 22-Apr-91: The following files are now available also from
garbo.uwasa.fi anonymous ftp archives from directory /pc/turbopas
totdemo.zip TechnoJock's Object Toolkit, demo programmes
 totdoc.zip TechnoJock's Object Toolkit, documentation
totng.zip TechnoJock's Object Toolkit, Norton Guide
 totsrc.zip TechnoJock's Object Toolkit, Source

While we are on the subject, a brief outline for comp.lang.pascal
readers on how to get the files. If you can use FTP then use that
possibility to connect to such a site as ours, Simtel20 (especially
if you are in North America), the mirrors of Simtel20 and garbo (I
only know of sol.deakin.oz.au), or any other ftp site that has these
utilities. (To find out which, try eg archie). If you are not
familiar with FTP, you are welcome to ask be for our prerecorded
instructions by email.

If you don't have FTP then (but only then) consider the mail
servers. I can send our prerecorded instructions on ours on an
email request. As for the mail servers of the other sites, trying
to provide that information is beyond my scope.

If these options are not open to you, you could consider BBSes. For
example Detroit Download Central in the USA 313-885-3956 has
simtel20 files (and thus probably all my pacakges including the
tsfaq19b.arc Frequently Asked Questions I so often refer to).

Hello Arjan,
Yes, I think so too. In fact my later FAQs /pc/pd2/post01.txt
and post02.txt are in that format, which at least Unix elm and
Jeroen's /pc/comm/rmail31b.zip can handle. I'll have to consider
this for the next releases of /pc/ts/tsfaq20.arc.
There are problems, though. One is that it'll mean many repeated
new lines in the FAQ files. Another, that it will take some doing.

Hello Nick,
This is the kind of clearly specified and appropriate request
that they always should be. I gladly grant you the permission for
the said purpose. The best of luck with your assignment.
I just wish that others facing similar situations would behave as
responsibly as you, and would remember the provisions of using
ts-programs:

The ts-packages may be used and distributed freely for
NON-COMMERCIAL, NON-INSTITUTIONAL, PRIVATE purposes, provided they
are not changed in any way. (Repacking with another method, such as
pkzip, is ok, though). For ANY other usage, such as use in a
business enterprise or at a university, contact the author for a
registration. Uploading to bulletin boards is encouraged. Please
do not distribute any part of the packages separately.

I would point out in particular, that class-room usage of my
programs without a permission is _not_ legitimate private usage, and
I should be contacted. I occasionally make expections by granting
permissions for good causes like this one. But teachers considering
class-room usage of my programs should contact me for a proper
registration. My feeling is that it is the teacher's university's
(not my) lot to provide the programs needed for such usages.

   All the best, Timo

As far as I know, this is a standard feature of all newer ftp-servers
(those based on version 5 of bsd ftpd). What all this means, is that
your host address did not translate to a valid name. Most likely your
host is not registered in any available name server, or none of the
name servers answered within the time-out period.

Hmm, you didn't tell us what exactly was the problem while you were
trying to use this. We know that we have problems with this (over some
months already) and we do have a standard answer to these queries. But
the problems described to us were that they can't get always 'dir' or
'ls' working. But they DO can get files retrieved if they know the
names of the files.

And we have now some hope to find out what is the trouble because I
have contacted MIPS Computer in USA yesterday so I guess they if
anybody can solve this one out.

Yes, but if we had chosen Finnish movie stars nobody would even know
what they were :) Or do you know for example who was Tauno Palo or
Ansa Ikonen ...

:

It is in the /pc/diskutil directory as I announced in another
posting.

But my true subject is for general information. Life is full of
rules and restrictions, and here is a very important DON'T. Our
incoming directory is strictly meant for uploads only. User's
should not try to download anything from it, nor should the authors
give such an impression. (Carl, definitely not a flame. Just to
the atttention of all you kind garbo.uwasa.fi uploaders, whom we
very much appreciate). What's more we try to minize the time
anything stays in the incoming directories. There is a regular
polling system to move them out of reach as quickly as possible. So
trying to download from the incoming directories is not even
rational.

There are two main resons for forbidding any download attempts from
the incoming directories. First we want to check the material sent
to us, even if it means delays for their release. Second, we want
to prevent any potential misuse of the incoming directories as a
junction (and we will take any necessay further steps to see to this
if need be).

Sorry, there is no shareware version of NR in C or Fortran at this
time. For PC's you can purchase diskettes from Cambridge University
Press in New York or Cambridge, U.K. For other machines, including
workstations, licenses are available from Numerical Recipes Software,
P.O. Box 243, Cambridge, MA 02238 (USA). Typical one-time fees for a
single workstation (single user) are $140., with an educational
discount price for qualified users of less than $100.

The documentation is made up by tschek.inf, tschek.nws, and the
message you get if you type spell alone.

(First let's assume that you have tschek12.arc, that is the latest
version). No big secret here. This is a genuine nagware feature,
which is not present in the registered version. (I assume that you
have noticed the /b switch).

Yes, I considered the default angle, and will consider it again. In
the meanwhile there is a simple way around this problem, though.
Use a batch file such as spl.bat in the package to do the
defaulting.

I have been gradually updating them into .zip's. But it is at the
very low end of my work list.

But obviously not recent enough, I'm afraid. We sometimes update at
a hectic pace.

> is most practical?

I don't know, since I use my own, better trick, which I have not
seen discovered by others on the net, but which should be obvious.
It is to put the different configurations on a set of floppies, and
boot from there. It is not much slower than booting from the hard
disk if one sets it right. It should read from the flowppy only
what is different for the configurations. All the rest should be
taken from the hard disk. My method renders these multiboot
utilities unnecessary for practical purposes.

Thank you Tom,
One important trick in uploading for your information for your future
uploads. If you do not make a carbon copy of your message to my fellow
moderator Harri Valkama (hv@bargo.uwasa.fi) of your upload stating that
it is specificially for my attention, your upload _automatically_ goes
to his queue. This is because it is our practice that he polls our
incoming directories. Since he takes care of the regular upload load,
this normally will mean a much longer wait, and usually also no
announcement in the news or Garbo infolist.

Thank you for your vigilance David. I immediately removed
nodelist.zip from garbo archives. This kind of feedback is very
useful because of the volumes of the material we handle, these
mistakes are bound to happen occasionally. While you are at it you
might want advise the SysOp of Compart BBS in Finland of the status
of this file, and you might also suggest to the copyright holder
that the include in the package a clear statement of the restriction
on ftp sites. I think you'll find whatever information may needed
to contact Compart BBS in /pc/INDEX file and/or the
/pc/bbs/fi######.arc list of Finnish BBSes.

I'm afraid I have to confirm that CAPS.EXE (as well as TURN.COM)
does not work on my PC. That is, not as I want to. Sure the
numlock is set for the numeric part of my keyboard, but
also are my arrows etc. changed into numbers! That, of course,
I do not want. And indeed, the numlock LED does not turn on, altough
that cannot bother me.

Nevertheless I hereby thank all those who've tried to help me.

I have seen that too, when the nlist command is used and the server
has a bug which causes it to send only LF at the end of each line,
instead of the CRLF which is *required* by the Internet RFC.

The error message I see from my FTP client is "100000 bare line feeds
received, and error may have occurred and the file may be incorrect."
The number is frequently higher and 100000 and is probably incorrect,
but the fact remains that the server is broken.

I offered to help with freely-distributable versions of ftpd and inetd
but was politely told by the folks at uwasa that the problem was
referred to MIPS for solution and it may be "some time" before it is
resolved.

If anyone from MIPS is reading this I hope they will look into this.
It's certainly poor public relations for them.

Hello Wey,

Ah, but I can help you with that. Have you downloaded /pc/INDEX,
/pc/ts/tsarc127.txt, and /pc/micsutil/utillist.txt. Silencers most
probably can be found in these file lists, which will be of use to
you in any case. One further trick is to try the database in archie
listing files that various ftp sites have.

In the case of silencers, the problem is that none that I have come
across of really work with the modern fast PCs. I have seen
messages stating that it has become a hardware rather than a
software problem. If you come up with something useful from your
search, might I suggest posting the information to c.b.i.p.d., since
I feel that there might be general interest.

There is one possibility in between. During a recent FTP connection I
found that although I often could not get a response to
        dir
from the subdirectories of /pc, I *could* nearly always get a response to
        nlist .
However, although nlist displays a list of files, it does not give any
other information about them. In particular, no file sizes.

Even so, there was something odd about the connection. Some commands were
followed almost instantaneously with the (unbelievable) assertion that
more than 100000 empty lines had been transferred! However, that was a
few days ago and I cannot now remember exactly what I was doing. In any
case, there are so many layers between my desk and garbo, that I hardly
dare venture guesses about where the assertion originated.

Subject: Re: XDOS320.ZIP - ExtraDOS: Adds the commands that DOS left out
Status: OR

A *huge* package called XDOS320.ZIP was recently uploaded to the SIMTEL20
<MSDOS.SYSUTL> directory. It's a collection of DOS utilities.

Extracted from EXTRADOS.TXT:

ExtraDOS is a compilation of tools useful to Microsoft DOS users.
I originally wrote these tools under MS-DOS because I found a need
for them and there were no commercially available products which
provided these functions. Some ExtraDOS tools were designed to
enhance programs already found in MS-DOS. Other tools were
familiar to the Unix world, but were not available in MS-DOS. In
addition, ExtraDOS compliments PC-Tools and Norton Utilities with
added tools these programs do not provide.

The ExtraDOS utilities are Copyright (c) 1985-91 by Foley Hi-Tech
Systems. These programs are not public domain, but are "shareware."

Ok, so far so good. Until I started looking at some of these
programs. Then something smelled fishy. I've worked with public
domain utilities for a *long* time, tweaked a fair share of them
myself, and (again and again) these Foley utilities seemed familiar:

    ALARMCLK - Alarm Clock Program
                 - SETALARM
ALLSUB - Perform Task In All Subdirectories
AREA - Telephone Area Code Search Utility
    BANNER - DOS Banner Display
    BOOT - PC Rebooting Utility
BOOTLOCK - Lock Out Reboot Keys and Break Keys
BOOTPAST - Boot Past a Floppy to the Hard Disk
BRKBOX - COM Port Break Out Box Display
    CAL - DOS Calendar Display
CAT - DOS Cat Text File Utility
    CHIMES - DOS Clock Chimes
CLEAN - Floppy Drive Cleaning Program
CLEANUP - Cleanup Your Drives from Duplicate Files
CURLOCK - Lock Cursor Shape Permanently
    CURSOR - Change Cursor Shapes

Need I go on? EVERY SINGLE ONE of these *strongly* resembles a similar
public domain utility. On closer examination, BRKBOX is IDENTICAL in
appearance and function to an old BREAKBOX utility I've used for years.
Except it how has a "Foley Hi-Tech' copyright! CURSOR is ABSOLUTELY
identical (and even has the original SSI copyright on the screen!). Yet
now it has a Foley Hi-Tech copyright! CHIMES is ABSOLUTELY identical to
NJCHIME.ARC (right on SIMTEL20) (right down to the choice of chimes), but
now it has a Foley Hi-Tech copyright!

EVAL - DOS Command Line Calculator
    FILEATTR - Change File Attributes
    FILEINFO - File Information Program
FILESIZE - File Size Listing Utility

It goes on and on. Sorry but I do suspect Foley of stealing every
public domain utility he could find and stuffing his copyright into
the source. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe he *did* write an original
utility, or make significant changes and improvements to entitle him
to a copyright. But for the most parts this smacks strongly of
piracy. How can you pirate from the public domain? Well, legally
there's no such offense. But morally there is.

And in the documentation he includes a list of "projects" Foley Hi-Tech
is currently working on. Heck, it reads like an extract of SIMTEL20's
PD:<MSDOS.SYSUTL> catalog!

I've had a gutfull of commercial enterprises ripping off the public
domain. Using our stuff I don't mind, but trying to OWN it? No way.
I'm ready to fight.

And there's another wee problem: Foley compressed most of the .EXE
programs with PKLITE. This did nothing to reduce the size of his 600+Kb
.ZIP archive, of course .. matter of fact, the PKLITE'd files made the
.ZIP bigger! But that's not the problem: it was just a royal pain to
PKLITE -x all those files to do a virus check! And some files could NOT
be restored to their uncompressed state:

EVAL.EXE :wrong version (compressed with PKLITE 1.0)
LS.EXE :some unknown proprietary Foley Hi-Tech compressor
  MAZE.EXE :ditto
  TEXTSRCH.EXE :ditto
TURBOBAT.COM :Has internal PKWARE copyright, but PKLITE 1.2 fails

So I can't check ANY of these for viri!

Perhaps an Info-IBMPC or Usenet reader can check with the Foley BBS and
get an explanation.

You do what you want about this archive. Me: I'm trashing this sucker.

Timo,
Remember now, I could be totally wrong about this! This guy could've
independently written all those utilities from scratch! And/or the
original authors could have all sent him their source, with permission to
include it (with his copyright) in his package. (He does mention this
option in his documentation, after all.) Who knows? There wasn't any
specific Toad Hall stuff in his package (although I tweaked many of the
utilities he's included in their original public domain form).

That's why I kind of hinted that someone close to his BBS contact him and
get his side of the story. (I can't afford that kind of long distance
detective work.) Maybe he *does* have full independent source for all
those things (to include CURSOR.COM with the SSI copyright :-). In that
case I'll be the first to apologize.

But somehow I just don't think so. Sigh ...

You are not imposing at all. On the contrary. This is a most
sensible question. I took a quick look, and goodies.zip is not yet
available. That means that it still has to be on my fellow
moderator's queue.

You are absolutely right. But if you do peek in occasionally, the
trick is to get /pc/_files.in using batchftp (automated ftp). That
is the least wasteful method, and using it is very easy once you
have managed to set it up for the first time.

That depends on the current load of garbo moderators (Harri Valkama
and Timo Salmi). The range is rather wide from almost immediate to
perhaps one week (there is no fixed maximum).

I suspect based on this request that the empty line in the beginning
can confuse our mail server. Sorry. Try again.

No, that is not the case. The problem lies somewhere else. The
code should work on a 8088 (it works on my Zenith Z-181 8086 with no
problems). TSLIN has no CPU specific features. Suggestions. Try
it on another machine (whatever the processor). If it works, your
machine is obviously not 100% IBM compatible. This is a common
problem with old machines, and is not a fault of the programs.
TSLIN uses direct screen writes (the Turbo Pascal Ctr unit) and some
old video cards cannot handle this.

Nice. TSLIN shouldn't break your rule.

I am pleased to hear that.

We are talking about /pc/ts/tsfltb13.arc file
FILTXT.EXE General filter for text files 08-05-89 12:01:28

The reason for your problem is that filtxt.exe is meant as a filter
for proper PC text files only. It thus assumes that you have PC
eolns (end-of-lines <13><10>). Obviously Apple format does not.
Therefore you should start my converting the Apple eolns by wrapping
your text in a PC style. You can try to use MicroEmacs or some
other capable text editor for this purpose.

As to other potential filters unfortunately I have no other answer
than the uncertain one of plodding trough the file lists of FTP
sites.

My own xor based algorithm with a twist. For obvious reasons I
won't go into more details.

The combine script for multi-part uuencoded mailings received from
LISTSERV cannot be run through the "combine" script used for cbip
postings. Use this script "lcombine" instead:

#! /bin/sh
cat $* | sed '/--- End /,/--- Part/d' | uudecode

I am occasionally asked both by foreign students and faculty for
opportunities to enroll to University of Vaasa as students or
visiting researchers. If you have these questions please start by
contacting Juha Martelius jma@uwasa.fi who is the secretary of
international affairs at our university. I am pleased at the
interest directed at our university, but I cannot take personally
the time of the initial screening of these inquiries, so please
direct these questions first to Juha.
