SYSCONF.EXE

The SYSCONF.EXE is on the system utilities diskette. You
can use this utility to either display or alter the current
system configuration contained in SETUP, and also to park
fixed disk heads when moving the system.

There are four commands in SYSCONF, with the following
syntax:

. SYSCONF
. SYSCONF /SETUP
. SYSCONF [op]+
. SYSCONF ?

Entering SYSCONF

To enter the SYSCONF utility, boot the system and insert the
system utilities diskette into drive A. At the DOS prompt
A>, type:

     SYSCONF <CR>

SYSCONF checks the system BIOS to determine current
configuration values and displays them onscreen. This
screen display varies, depending on which options are
currently supported by your system.

To display the current status of your system configuration,
type SYSCONF then Enter. A screen message, similar to the
following, appears:

Acer System Configuration Set/Read Utility VX.XX

BIOS Status : RAM BIOS is Active
Video Status : RAM Video is Active
Fixed Disk Status : Read/Write (Normal)
          Floppy Status : Read/Write (Normal)
          Operating Speed : TOP

                Type SYSCONF ? for Help
                =======================

Entering SYSCONF /SETUP

To enter the SETUP program, at the DOS prompt A>, type:

   SYSCONF /Setup <CR>

The SETUP main menu appears. Follow the directions in the
section concerning SETUP to enter configuration values, to
physically format your fixed disk or to set your system
password.

Entering Sysconf [op]+

The SYSCONF [op]+ command changes the system configuration
parameters for system speed, BIOS location modes, and write
protecting disk drives, without entering the SETUP program.
The SYSCONF [op]+ command assigns operands for each
parameter, which correspond to the SETUP parameter options.
Configuration values set when using this command are only
valid during the current DOS run-time. When you switch off
the system the values are not set in CMOS memory.

SYSCONF [op]+ has the syntax:
[/S:TOP | /S:LOW | /S:SMART] [/D:RO | /D:RW]
[/F:RO | /F:RW] [/PARK]

The SYSCONF help screen explains the function of each
operand. Enter the operands you wish to set, leaving a
space between each operand.

To enter the help screen, at the DOS prompt A>, type:

     SYSCONF ? <CR>

The following screen message appears:

OS/2 System Environment Parameters

If you are using the OS/2 operating system, there are no
disk drive write protect options in SYSCONF.

To display the current status of your system configuration,
type SYSCONF then Enter. The following screen appears:

Parking Fixed Disk Heads

The distance between the fixed disk read/write heads and the
disks themselves is infinitesimally small. When you move
the system unit to a new location, shocks or strong
vibration during transport may cause the heads to rub
against the platters, damaging the disk and destroying
stored data.

The /PARK operand protects the disk against damage whenever
you move the system unit, even for a short distance. This
operand relocates the fixed disk read/write heads over a
safe (non-data) area of the drive platter to prevent damage
to the disk.

To set the /PARK operand, at the DOS prompt type:

     A>SYSCONF /park <CR>

This message appears:

          Fixed Disk Head is Parked,
You Can Turn Off System Now!
          ============================

          <Press ENTER key to continue>

Turn off the system unit power. The system is now ready to
be moved. The read/write heads automatically return to
their normal area when you power-on the system again.
