MEMM.SYS

The MEMM utility is designed to manage expanded memory
in 80286-based systems. It lets users run applications like
Lotus 1-2-3 and some other data bases that need memory
beyond the 640 KB boundary of DOS. The program is
compatible with LIMSIM EMS 4.0.

Installing MEMM

Follow these steps to use the MEMM:

1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on your fixed disk. Insert
the line:

device = [drive name:]MEMM.SYS

in your CONFIG.SYS file. If CONFIG.SYS does not exist, see
the MS-DOS manual on how to create one.

NOTE: Place the MEMM entry before any other programs,
like Disk Cache, that use extended or expanded memory.

3. Enter the SETUP menu to select EMS memory size.

4. Reboot your system with the new CONFIG.SYS. When the
system is initialized, a screen like this appears:

Expanded Memory Manager - Version x.xxM

     xxx Pages OK
     Expanded Memory: xxx Kbytes
     Page Frame: C000h
     Base Port: 208h
     Handle Count: 64
     MEMM Driver Length: xxxx bytes

CONFIG.SYS Device Parameters

The MEMM command line in your CONFIG.SYS file can accept
three parameters. The syntax is:

device = [drive name:]MEMM.SYS [/P=xxxx] [/B=xxx] [/H=xxx]

The following paragraphs explain each parameter.

/P= (Page_Frame)

This parameter specifies the start address of the page-
frame. A page-frame is a 64 KB continuous memory block.
Valid addresses are C000, C400, C800, CC00, D000, D400,
D800, DC00 and E000. The default starting address (no
parameter) will automatically find an available 64 KB block
from C0000h to E000h memory area.

/B= (Base_Port)

This parameter specifies the I/O port used by MEMM. The
valid values are 208, 218, 228, and 238. The default value
is 208.

/H= (Handle_Count)

This parameter specifies the number MEMM handles. The valid
range is from 2 to 255. The default value is 64.
Specifying a smaller value gives a high MEMM performance and
saves the conventional memory space.
