1. INTRODUCTION
===============

This Compatibility Fix for 98lite is for all versions of
98lite that install the windows95 shell into windows98.
This includes 98litev1.3, 98litev1.5x, ShellSwap and
IERemove. The patch should be installed LAST, after
windows is up and running in the 98lite configuration and
after you apply any other patches.

98patch.exe will permanently fix most known issues with
98lite that are not related directly to IE. This patch
  will fix the following:

     a) Advanced Display Preferences rundll crash
     b) Briefcase
     c) Updating of the desktop icons from the display
properties 'Effects' tab or when using Themes
     d) windows98 Notepad.exe
     e) Windows98 Wordpad.exe (word97 support reinstated)
     f) Restore Windows98 style desktop icons
     g) Changes the text on the start-menu to "Windows98"
     h) Changes Explorer Help menu "about Windows 95" to
        "about Windows98"

NOTE: 98patch.exe alters a number of microsoft files
and therefore the use of this patch violates the End
User Agreement (EULA) that you accepted when you installed
Windows98. If you wish to abide by the EULA, as you are
required to do, then please discard 98patch.exe now.

2. INSTALLATION
===============

  ********************** IMPORTANT NOTE ********************

YOU WILL HAVE TO DELETE WORDPAD.EXE FROM THE SETUP FOLDER
if you installed Windows98 using 98lite.

If your setup files are on your hard disk you must remove
any windows95 files from the folder containing the setup
CAB files. 98lite will have moved copies of the
windows95 files to a 98lite subdirectory for safekeeping,
these copies of the files are fine, and can stay where they
are in the 98lite subdirectory. It is only any win95 files
in the setup directory itself that must be removed. You
will have to remove wordpad.exe. (wordpad.exe was
intentionally left in the setup folder for subsequent
addition of this optional feature.) Any windows95 files
left in the setup folder would be installed instead of the
win98 file and that would be bad. 98lite v1.5+ is smart
enough to look in the 98lite subdirectory for any subsequent
  installations.
  **********************************************************

  98patch.exe operates in windows.

You require your Windows98 CDROM (or setup files on your
hard disk - see IMPORTANT NOTE above).

Double-Click on the 98patch.exe file in windows and the
comprehensive Compatibility Update to 98lite will start.
After copying some files from your windows98 CD, you will
be prompted to reboot, which you should do straight away
to avoid any problems. After you reboot, the patch will
operate before presenting you with the 'improved' desktop.

3. OTHER NOTES
==============
After changing the Recycle Bin icon using the Effects Tab
of the Display Properties, the icon will not be updated
until you open or close the recycle bin or delete a file.
Themes will update the icon automatically, but sometimes
interchanges the empty and full icons. The correct icon
is always shown after opening the recycle bin or deleting
 a file.

If you are using windows95 versions of the briefcase and/or
control panel display applet, you will be automatically
upgraded to the modified windows98 versions. Should this
be a problem for you (it shouldn't) then you will have to
revert back to the windows95 files yourself.

You can re-run the patch at any time if you (re-)install any
of the files that are modified. (e.g. if you install Themes
or Wordpad AFTER runing the patch, you will have to re-run
 98patch to update these files.

4. DETAILED INFORMATION FOR ADVANCED USERS
==========================================

  98patch operates in two modes:

MODE 1: 98lite Compatibility Fix Update
  ---------------------------------------
(NO command line parameters - operation in WINDOWS)

  98patch will execute and:

    a) Extract the original windows98 shell32.dll from the
Windows98 CDROM (or setup files on your disk) and
install it in the system dir as shell32.w98.

    b) Extract from the Windows98 CDROM (or setup files on
your disk), and then install in the correct locations,
       the original windows98 versions of:
            notepad.exe
            wordpad.exe* (+ mswrd832.cvt for word97 support)
            display control panel (desk.cpl, deskcp16.dll)
            briefcase files* (syncui.dll,synceng.dll)
            plustab.dll
            Themes.exe*
                             *(only if already present)

    c) Reboot to ensure no programs are loaded when patch
       operates

    d) Modify notepad.exe, wordpad.exe, syncui.dll and
desk.cpl to read the windows98 shell32.w98 instead of
       the windows95 shell32.dll. The original windows98
files are backed up with a .BAK extension.

    e) Modify plustab.dll and Themes.exe so they will change
the desktop icons. Thanks to Nathan Lineback for
       this one. http://pla-netx.com/linebackn/evil/lab.html

    f) The patch alters the registry settings for the default
shell icons to use the new icons in shell32.w98. Default
Icons are re-set for folders, drives, control panel,
printers, network neighborhood, recycle bin and all the
high-color icon translations stored at "HKLM,Software\
       Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons".

    g) The patch alters the text on the start-menu and on the
Help "About Windows9x" menu item. I assume that if you
altered the start menu yourself that you have the means
to put your own bitmap back should you feel the need.
The patch does not alter anything else in explorer.exe
so you can overwrite it with the original windows95
version without affecting anything. Thanks to
Eric Nielsen (sthing@poboxes.com) for doing the hard
       work for these.

The patch needs to find wordpad.inf and mstask.inf
in the windows\inf directory. The patch reads these to
find the correct short filename paths for the Accessories
and Plus! directories. This "grotty" approach ensures
compatibility with international versions of windows98.

MODE 2: Filename passed as a parameter
  --------------------------------------
        (operation in DOS or WINDOWS)

        SYNTAX: 98patch <filename>

A binary search and replace will be performed on the file
<filename> to replace any reference to shell32.dll with
shell32.w98. This allows you to alter any other files
that you may come across. (If I missed something in
MODE 1 that you think should be included please email me.

The original file is backed up with a .BAK extension.

YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN HERE. DO NOT EMAIL ME IF YOU BREAK
ANYTHING BY RUNNING THIS PATCH IN MODE2.

5. WHATS NEW
=============
ver 1.1
- fixed bug that prevented booting into safe mode.
- can now run patch on individual files (Mode 2) in DOS.
