Install NextRecall
NextRecall is not a program for a specified platform. It was developed for the Java Runtime System. Java is a new way of executing programs. You will need a Runtime System for your operating system. If you have already Java-Support, you may ignore the following instructions.

You may check the following Sites for a Runtime System:

While installing the Java-System you have to set an environment variable called CLASSPATH. Please remember the way you modified this variable for further use down this chapter.

After you have installed your Java-System, you could go on with the installation of NextRecall. To unzip the Class File you need a Unzipping-Tool with support of long filenames, such as WinZip for Windows 95/NT. Check the software market for unzipping utilities for your local OS.

Step 1: Adding NextRecall classes to the Java-System

Each Java Application consists of a bunch of .class files. These represent the program. The file classes.zip contains the class files of NextRecall. The Java Runtime System needs to know where this files are stored. The Author recommends following two ways. Please choose one of them:

  • Unzip the classes.zip to a directory

Choose this way to store a lot of Java applications. This requires more disk space. Do the following to create such a directory:

    • Create a directory. (e.g. on Windows 95/NT do this: md c:\JavaApps)
    • Add this directory to your CLASSPATH (e.g. on Windows 95/NT do this: set CLASSPATH=c:\java\lib\classes.zip;c:\JavaApps)
Now you may unzip classes.zip to this new directory. Please note that the directory struture of the zip file must be restored!

  • Adding the Class-File to your CLASSPATH

This is a good way if you want to save disk space. The file does not need to be extracted. If more Java apps should be installed, the CLASSPATH becomes very huge. So it is sometimes better to use method one.

    • Please add the complete path of the classes.zip file to your CLASSPATH variable. (e.g. on Windows 95/NT do this: set CLASSPATH=c:\java\lib\classes.zip;c:\nextrecall\classes.zip

Now you may start the program by running your interpreter with this class file:

nextrecall.nextrecall

(e.g. on Windows 95/NT enter this: java nextrecall.nextrecall)

If you see the application window, the biggest step is DONE. If not, check your configuration.

Now you should configure the App. First, choose the application from which you want to start NextRecall in Feature. You MUST specify a work directory! NextRecall saves its configuration file there. This work directory shouldn't change during the use of NextRecall!

(e.g. on Windows 95/NT, add the program to the Start Menu using the Explorer and specify the Work directory c:\JavaApps\nextrecall)

Now you may run NextRecall and use the Preferences... item in the file menu. A dialog opens.

  • Enter Web-Browser

Please specify the Web-Browser in the textfield named "Webbrowser:". This should be an executable file. Use the "Browse..." button to find the file.

  • Enter Proxy-Host, -Port

If you Internet-Connection requires a Proxy-Host, enter Host and Port in the textfields of the same name.

  • Specify Sample Form directory

Enter the complete path to the directory, where forms should be stored. This directory must be public accessible.

Choose OK to terminate the dialog box.

Your System is configured and ready-to-run. Go on with the User Interface introduction.
